Continua.
E olha a multidão, suavemente, com horror.

Entra no café.
Abre um livro fantástico, impossível.
Mas não lê.
Trabalha - numa música secreta, inaudível.

Pede um cigarro. Fuma.
Labaredas loucas saem-lhe da garganta.
Da bruma
espreita-o uma mulher nua, branca, branca.

Fuma mais. Outra vez.

Fechada à chave a humanidade janta.
Livre, vagabundo
dói-lhe um sorriso nos lábios. Canta.

Febre alta, violenta
e dois olhos terríveis, extraordinários, belos,
Fiel, atenta

"When You Are Old"

"When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars."

“Delicada a hora
Que nos apavora
Lentamente
A ternura que regressa
A promessa
Do momento,
Inefável abraço
Louco, o desejo,
Leva-me contigo
A ti pertenço, em ti me revejo.”

“A Peste”

- Tenho. A simpatia.
Duas campainhas de ambulância ressoaram ao longe. (...) Depois o silêncio voltou. Rieux contou duas rotações do farol.
- Justamente. Pode ser-se santo sem Deus? Eis o único problema que hoje me preocupa.
(...)

E a vida surgiu no Universo.

"Serenade"

So sweet the hour, so calm the time,
I feel it more than half a crime,
When Nature sleeps and stars are mute,
To mar the silence ev'n with lute.
At rest on ocean's brilliant dyes
An image of Elysium lies:
Seven Pleiades entranced in Heaven,
Form in the deep another seven:
Endymion nodding from above
Sees in the sea a second love.
Within the valleys dim and brown,
And on the spectral mountain's crown,
The wearied light is dying down,
And earth, and stars, and sea, and sky
Are redolent of sleep, as I
Am redolent of thee and thine
Enthralling love, my Adeline.
But list, O list,- so soft and low
Thy lover's voice tonight shall flow,
That, scarce awake, thy soul shall deem
My words the music of a dream.
Thus, while no single sound too rude
Upon thy slumber shall intrude,
Our thoughts, our souls- O God above!
In every deed shall mingle, love.
“Keep me fully glad with nothing. Only
take my hand in your hand.
In the gloom of the deepening night take
up my heart and play with it as you list.
Bind me close to you with nothing.
I will spread myself out at your feet and lie still. Under this clouded sky I will meet silence with silence. I will become
one with the night clasping the earth in my breast.
Make my life glad with nothing.
The rains sweep the sky from end to end.
Jasmines in the wet untamable wind revel
in their own perfume. The cloud-hidden
stars thrill in secret. Let me fill to the full
my heart with nothing but my own
depth of joy.”
"Fear not the strangeness you feel.
The future must enter you
Long before it happens.
Just wait for the birth.
For the hour of new clarity."
